چکیده

The RXTE satellite observed the Coma cluster for ∼177 ks during November and December 2000, a second observation motivated by the intriguing results from the first ∼87 ks observation in 1996. Analysis of the new dataset confirms that thermal emission from isothermal gas does not provide a good fit to the spectral distribution of the emission from the inner 1 radial region. While the observed spectrum may be fit by emission from gas with a substantial temperature gradient, it is more likely that the emission includes also a secondary non-thermal component. If so, non-thermal emission comprises ∼ 8% of the total 4– 20 keV flux. Interpreting this emission as due to Compton scattering of relativistic electrons (which produce the known extended radio emission) by the cosmic microwave background radiation, we determine that the mean, volume-averaged magnetic field in the central region of Coma is

Is there a hard tail in the Coma Cluster X-ray spectrum?

We report results from a re-analysis of the BeppoSAX observation of Coma and from the analysis of a second, yet unpublished observation of the same object. From our re-analysis of the first observation we find that the statistical evidence for a hard tail is about 2σ. From the analysis of the second observation which, thanks to the lower background and the longer exposure time, is characterized...

A Suzaku Search for Non-thermal Emission at Hard X-ray Energies in the Coma Cluster

The brightest cluster radio halo known resides in the Coma cluster of galaxies. The relativistic electrons producing this diffuse synchrotron emission should also produce inverse Compton emission that becomes competitive with thermal emission from the ICM at hard X-ray energies. Thus far, claimed detections of this emission in Coma are controversial (e.g., Fusco-Femiano et al. 2004; Rossetti & ...

RXTE and ASCA Constraints on Non-thermal Emission from the A2256 Galaxy Cluster

An 8.3 hour observation of the Abell 2256 galaxy cluster using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) proportional counter array (PCA) produced a high quality spectrum in the 2 30 keV range. Joint fitting with the 0.7 11 keV spectrum obtained with the Advanced Satellite for Astrophysics and Cosmology (ASCA) Gas Imaging spectrometer (GIS) gives an upperlimit of ∼2.3×10−7 photons cm−2 sec−1 keV−1...

Confirmation of non-thermal hard X–ray excess in the Coma cluster from two epoch observations

We report the hard X–ray spectrum of the Coma cluster obtained using the PDS data of two independent BeppoSAX observations performed with a time interval of about three years. In both the spectra a non thermal excess with respect to the thermal emission is present at a confidence level of ∼ 3.4σ. The combined spectrum obtained by adding up the two spectra allows a measurement of the excess at t...

An RXTE Observation of the Vela Pulsar: Filling in the X-ray Gap

We have detected pulsed emission from the Vela pulsar at 2 30 keV during a 93 ks observation with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The RXTE pulse profile shows two peaks, that are roughly in phase with the EGRET peaks, but does not show any significant interpeak emission. The phase of Peak 2 is energy dependent, moving to higher phase with increasing energy in the RXTE band, in phase ali...
